Two witches. A portal. And lots of homework. Also a hot vet. And a perfect pair of Prada boots.

EARLY MAGIC is a young adult contemporary fantasy of 94,000 words. It blends the character-driven storytelling of Rachel Griffin’s Wild is the Witch with the modern teenage witchcraft of Alyssa Villaire’s The Glittering Edge.

Rowan Standish has it all, on paper. Sixteen, beautiful, heir to the Standish fortune and granddaughter of the High Priestess–her smooth rise to the top of the Ilitra Lor coven should be a breeze. The only thing stopping her is her own ego, and her grandmother’s suffocating rules. When Rowan senses latent magic in her classmate Danika, she grabs the opportunity to bypass her grandmother and make her own coven.

Danika, still reeling after her mother’s death and unaware of her hereditary powers, welcomes the distraction of an invitation to Rowan’s rogue coven. But the fun implodes when Rowan loses her magic to a trickster daemon and the mini coven fractures.

In trouble with her grandmother and with her witchcraft held hostage, Rowan is drawn into the hunt for a missing portal, and must decide how far she’ll go to reclaim her power. Meanwhile, Danika’s sixteenth birthday ignites her magic, leading to a chance to join the Ilitra Lor coven. But as she struggles to understand her mother’s secrecy, she finds disturbing links between her mom’s research into mysterious stone keys, her sudden death, and forces that may be tied to Rowan’s search. Though perceived betrayals keep the girls apart, their trajectories edge closer with every revelation.

On the path to initiation, amid mutual rivalry, poor romantic choices, and math homework, one girl chases the truth and the other clings to power. If they don’t work together, they’ll end up with nothing, and magic itself could be on the line.

Early Magic is the first in a planned series.
